How to play Klondike well once you know the rules: the decisions that matter, and the habits that win.
Every hidden card is a card you cannot plan around. When you have a choice between moves, pick the one that uncovers a face-down card, and among those, the column with the most hidden cards still in it. The seventh column holds six of them, and freeing it early is what opens up most games.
Moving a card from one face-up pile to another without revealing anything is worth doing only when it sets up a reveal on the next move.
An empty column can only take a king, or a sequence that starts with one. Clearing a column with no king ready to go into it wastes the space, and it may cost you the chance to move a king that turns up later.
When you have two kings to choose from, pick the one whose queen of the opposite colour you can already see. If the red queen is available, move the black king first.
Aces and twos never help you build anything in the tableau, so play them to the foundations as soon as they appear. Higher cards are different: a black five on the foundation is a black five you can no longer put a red four on.
A good rule is to move a card up only when both cards of the opposite colour one rank lower are already on the foundations, or when moving it uncovers a card you need. Nothing on the foundation can come back down here.
In draw-one Klondike with unlimited passes, you can look through the whole stock before committing to anything, so do. You can wait for the card you need rather than making a move you will regret.
In draw-three, only every third card is reachable on each pass, and taking a card from the waste changes which cards come up next time. Before the stock runs out, think about whether a play from the waste will shift a card you need into a position you can reach — sometimes playing a card you do not need is what unlocks the one you do.
Long sequences are only useful if they can move. When you have a choice between placing a red card on either of two black ones, pick the move that leaves the other black card free to take something next, and try not to bury a colour you are short of under a long pile.
When a game stalls, look for moves you have been ignoring: shifting part of a sequence to another column can free the card at its base.
