Play Cribbage against the computer

How a game of Cribbage against bots works here: seating them, what they can see, how they decide, and what they leave to you.

You and one bot

Cribbage here is the two-handed game, so a game against the computer is you and a single bot. Open a table, press "Add an opponent" in the lobby, and choose the length of the game: 121 points, twice round the board, or 61 for a short one.

Only the host can seat the bot, and only before the first deal. It sits down with a name and a tag that says bot.

What the bot can see

Its own six cards, then the starter, then the cards laid in the play. It never sees your hand or the crib until they are shown, because hands are kept on the server and the bot plays there too.

Every count is done by the site, for both of you, so there is no missing a fifteen or claiming one that is not there. The bot takes about a second over each card.

How the bot plays

For the crib, the bot keeps the four cards that score most on their own, without thinking about what the starter might be. It throws the same two cards whether the crib is its own or yours — where a good player would keep fives and pairs out of an opponent's crib.

In the play it lays whichever card scores most at that moment, and the lowest card when nothing scores. That collects its fifteens and pairs, but it never looks ahead: it will leave the count at 21, where any ten of yours makes 31.

How to beat it

Use your crib against it. When the bot deals, it may throw you a five or a pair it could not use; when you deal, throw your own good cards to your crib knowing the bot is not trying to spoil it.

In the play, lead cards that invite a mistake. The bot takes any immediate points, so a four led to tempt a pair can let you make three of a kind, and a count left at 21 or 26 is one it will often step into.

Between hands, and leaving

After each deal the site counts both hands and the crib, non-dealer first, and waits for you to press "Ready for the next hand". The game can end in the middle of a count: whoever reaches the target first wins, even if the other hand would have scored more.

If you close the tab, your seat is held for twenty-five seconds, and after that the site plays your cards only until you come back.
