How Thousand is played here

The rules this table deals by. Everybody at the table sees the same lines before the first hand.

  • A marriage is a king and a queen of a suit, declared as you lead one of them — and it makes that suit trump from that moment, replacing whatever was trump before. Hearts 100, diamonds 80, clubs 60, spades 40.
  • Bidding starts at 100 and climbs in tens. The winner takes the three face-down cards, then gives one away to each opponent.
  • Twenty-four cards, seven each and three face down. Ace 11, ten 10, king 4, queen 3, jack 2 — a hundred and twenty in the pack, against two hundred and eighty in the four marriages. Follow suit, beat the card if you can, and trump if you cannot follow.
  • Reach 880 and you are on the barrel: you may no longer score by defending at all, only by declaring and making a contract. Three failed attempts and you drop back to 760. The match is a thousand.
