Nertz rules

Everyone plays solitaire at once, onto shared piles in the middle.

  • 2-6 players
  • Two or more decks

Everyone plays a solitaire at the same time, onto shared foundation piles in the middle. It is loud, fast, and needs one deck per player with a different back design.

What you need

One 52-card deck per player, each visibly different. Two to six players around a table everyone can reach across.

Your layout

Thirteen cards in a face-down pile with the top card turned up — this is your nertz pile. Four cards face up in a row beside it — your work piles. The remaining 35 cards are your stock, held in hand.

The play

There are no turns. Everyone plays at once, as fast as they can.

Into the middle: an ace may be played to the centre at any time, starting a foundation. Foundations build upward in suit — ace, two, three — and anyone may play onto any foundation.

On your work piles: build downward in alternating colours, as in Klondike. Move a card or a whole sequence from one work pile to another.

Your nertz pile: turn its top card up and play it whenever you can. Emptying this pile is the goal.

Your stock: turn three cards at a time and play the top one if you can. Recycle it as often as you like.

An empty work pile is filled from the nertz pile.

Calling nertz

The first player to empty their nertz pile shouts nertz and play stops immediately.

Scoring

Count the cards you got onto the foundations: 1 point each. Subtract 2 points for every card left in your nertz pile. The player who called nertz gets a 10-point bonus.

Sort the cards back by their backs, and deal again. Game is 100 points.
