Canasta: questions and answers

Short answers to the questions people ask most about Canasta. Everything else is in the full rules.

How many wild cards can a canasta meld have?
No more than three, and never more wild cards than natural ones. Jokers and twos are the wild cards.
Can you meld runs in canasta?
No. Every meld in canasta is three or more cards of the same rank. A canasta is a meld of seven or more.
How much do you need for your first meld?
It depends on your side's score: 50 points while you have under 1,500, 90 from 1,500 to 3,000, and 120 above that. A side below zero needs only 15. The side ahead is the one that finds it hardest to get started.
What does it mean when the discard pile is frozen?
It holds a wild card or a red three. While it is frozen, you may take the pile only by melding its top card with a natural pair from your hand — no wild cards, and no adding it to a meld already on the table.
What are the cards worth in canasta?
Jokers 50, aces and twos 20, kings down to eights 10, and sevens down to fours and the black threes 5. A natural canasta scores a 500 bonus and a mixed one 300, and each red three is worth 100 — or minus 100 to a side that has not melded.
What do black threes do?
Discard one and the next player cannot take the pile on that turn. Black threes cannot be melded like other cards, which makes them the safest discard in the game.
When can you go out in canasta?
Once your side has at least one canasta. You go out by melding every card, or by melding all but one and discarding it — and asking your partner first is the one piece of table talk the rules allow.
How many points is a game of canasta?
5,000. With four players in two partnerships that is usually several hands, and the minimum for your first meld rises as your side gets closer.
